Public Jobs in Italy: The Best Openings This September

Government, healthcare, RAI and local authorities are recruiting across Italy this September.

by Lorenzo Magliani

September is one of the busiest months of 2026 for anyone looking for a job in Italy’s public sector.

Across ministries, regional governments, hospitals, municipalities, public companies and the Armed Forces, the month includes approximately 1,755 defined positions across dozens of public competitions.

And these opportunities are not only for highly specialized graduates.

While many of the largest recruitment campaigns require a university degree, there are also jobs open to candidates with a high-school diploma and, in some healthcare and technical roles, specific professional qualifications rather than a degree.

The biggest opportunity by far comes from the Italian government itself: the Presidency of the Council of Ministers is recruiting 882 technical specialists on permanent contracts for public administrations across Southern Italy.

But that is only one part of a much broader recruitment wave.

More Than 1,700 Public Jobs Across Italy

The September recruitment calendar covers almost every major branch of the Italian public sector.

Of the approximately 1,755 identified positions, around 900 are connected to central government and national public bodies, while public healthcare accounts for nearly 600 jobs.

Regional governments, municipalities and publicly controlled companies add further opportunities, while the Armed Forces are also recruiting officers and specialist personnel.

The qualification requirements vary significantly.

More than 1,400 of the positions identified for the month require a university degree, but around 160 are linked to competitions accessible with a high-school diploma. Other healthcare and technical positions may be available to candidates with professional qualifications, depending on the individual notice.

The Biggest Competition: 882 Permanent Government Jobs

The headline recruitment campaign of September comes from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers’ Department for Cohesion Policies.

The government is recruiting 882 technical specialists on full-time permanent contracts for public administrations in seven southern Italian regions.

The positions are distributed as follows:

  • Sicily: 269 jobs
  • Campania: 237 jobs
  • Puglia: 168 jobs
  • Calabria: 104 jobs
  • Sardinia: 61 jobs
  • Basilicata: 35 jobs
  • Molise: 8 jobs

The successful candidates will work for regions, metropolitan cities, provinces, municipalities and other public administrations involved in cohesion and territorial development policies.

The competition is aimed at technical specialists and requires the qualifications specified in the official notice.

Applications close on September 23, 2026 at 11:59 p.m.

This is one of the most important public recruitment campaigns of the month because the contracts are permanent, rather than temporary positions linked to a short-term project.

RAI Is Hiring 34 Young People With a Diploma

One of the most attractive opportunities for younger candidates comes from Italy’s national broadcaster.

RAI is recruiting 34 administrative employees in several Italian cities, including Rome, Milan, Turin and Naples.

The selection is open to candidates aged between 18 and 29 years and 364 days who hold a five-year secondary-school diploma.

Successful applicants will enter through a 36-month professional apprenticeship contract.

The published gross annual salary starts at approximately €24,400 and increases during the apprenticeship period.

The deadline is particularly important: applications must be submitted by 12:00 noon on September 10.

The Armed Forces Are Recruiting Too

September also offers opportunities for candidates interested in a military career.

The Italian Air Force is recruiting 50 officer cadets: 20 trainee pilot officers and another 30 fixed-term officer cadets in different specialist roles.

The application deadline is September 10 at 11:59 p.m., with educational and age requirements varying according to the specific route selected.

Another 14 permanent lieutenant positions in the Italian Army remain available with a deadline extending to October 1.

Healthcare Is the Other Big Recruitment Engine

If central government dominates the total number of vacancies, healthcare has the widest geographical spread.

September competitions include approximately 588 healthcare positions across 21 procedures, covering hospitals and public health organisations in Lombardy, Veneto, Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Marche, Molise, Umbria, Sicily and Trentino-Alto Adige.

Among the biggest opportunities are around 100 nursing positions at ASST Lecco, 50 nurses at ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo in Milan and more than 50 prevention technician positions in Veneto.

There are also openings for laboratory technicians, radiographers, doctors, nurses, OSS care workers and other specialist profiles.

This makes healthcare one of the most interesting sectors for candidates who want to enter the Italian public system without necessarily pursuing a traditional administrative career.

Some Public Jobs Are Open Without a University Degree

A public-sector career in Italy does not always require a degree.

Several September competitions are accessible with a high-school diploma or specific professional qualification. RAI’s 34 administrative apprenticeships are one example, but local authorities and healthcare organisations are also recruiting technical staff, administrative profiles and OSS workers.

In Emilia-Romagna, for example, regional and local authorities have opened competitions for technical instructors, while public care organisations are recruiting qualified healthcare and social-care staff on permanent contracts.

The key is to check the qualification requirement in each individual notice rather than assuming that all public competitions are reserved for graduates.

Do Not Miss the September Deadlines

One of the biggest mistakes with Italian public competitions is assuming that applications stay open until the end of the month.

They do not.

Several important deadlines fall during the first half of September. RAI applications close on September 10, while a number of healthcare and local competitions also close between the second and third week of the month.

The largest opportunity, the 882 permanent technical positions linked to cohesion policies in Southern Italy, remains open until September 23.

Other competitions extend into late September or early October, so candidates who miss the earliest deadlines still have time to find alternatives.

Always check the exact closing time as well as the date: some procedures close at noon, others at 11:59 p.m.

How Do You Apply for a Public Job in Italy?

Most Italian public competitions are now managed through inPA, the national recruitment portal for the Public Administration.

Candidates generally need to access the platform with a recognised digital identity, complete their personal and professional profile and submit the application directly online.

Each competition has its own requirements, documents and selection process. Written tests, multiple-choice exams, technical assessments and oral interviews are all common.

Meeting the educational requirement is therefore only the first step. Applicants should always read the complete official notice before submitting an application.

Can Foreigners Apply for Public Jobs in Italy?

Yes, in some cases.

Italian citizenship is not automatically required for every public-sector position. EU citizens can access many public jobs, provided the role does not involve the direct or indirect exercise of public authority or the protection of national interests.

Italian law also allows access in certain circumstances for family members of EU citizens and for specific categories of non-EU nationals.

However, eligibility depends on the individual competition. Nationality, residence status, recognition of foreign qualifications and Italian-language requirements can all vary.

For international applicants, the safest approach is to check the nationality section of the official notice before preparing the application.

Where to Find the Official Competitions

With more than 1,700 identified positions this September, opportunities range from government specialists and nurses to administrative employees, technicians and military personnel.
