These 10 employers are in urgent need of hiring engineers

Weapons, energy, automobiles, and more: here are the sectors hiring an increasing number of engineers (and which specializations are in highest demand)

by Federico Casanova

An engineering degree can take you in many different directions. There is no single industry or type of employer to focus on: engineering graduates can work in design, manufacturing, infrastructure, energy, software, environmental services and much more. The key is to match your skills with the needs of employers and find out which companies are recruiting now.

The figures offer a useful starting point. According to Unioncamere’s Excelsior database, around 21’960 openings for industrial and management engineers were planned for 2025, and employers reported recruitment difficulties in 60% of cases. This figure covers one specific professional group rather than all engineers, but it highlights the value of matching your qualifications to employers’ needs. Here are ten places to start, separating verified vacancies from companies worth monitoring over time.

1. MM: water networks and infrastructure

If you are interested in water systems, engineering design or construction sites, MM S.p.A. is worth checking first. The company works on urban services and infrastructure and published two relevant vacancies in October: Network Works Design Assistant, with a deadline of 12 November 2026, and Assistant to the Construction Safety Coordinator, with a deadline of 9 November. These roles may suit graduates in civil or environmental engineering, or candidates with construction safety expertise.

2. Eni: energy, digital technology and software

Eni is not just about oil and industrial plants. The group also offers opportunities for people working in software, data and digital technologies. One vacancy published in October is for a Junior Software Engineer in San Donato Milanese. The listing gives a deadline of 30 October 2026 and a gross annual salary starting at 40’000 euro, with different terms possible under a professional apprenticeship. The role is aimed at candidates with software development skills, so check the requirements and confirm that applications are still open before applying.

3. Webuild: build major infrastructure projects

Bridges, tunnels, transport systems and complex infrastructure: Webuild is a name to know if you have a background in civil, industrial, electrical or automation engineering. An October listing is for an Automation & Industrial Systems Engineer based in Milan. The role focuses on automation systems, industrial networks and technologies supporting major infrastructure projects. It may appeal to candidates who want to work on international projects and contribute from the technical design stage through to on-site operational support.

4. RINA: embedded software and applied engineering

If you enjoy working across hardware and software, take a look at RINA. On 21 October, the group published an Embedded Software & Data Processing Engineer vacancy, with locations including Rome, Genoa and other Italian cities. The role involves developing and testing embedded software, with skills such as C/C++, Linux and knowledge of integrated-system architectures. It is a good example of how an engineering degree can lead to highly specialised technology roles. Read the vacancy on RINA’s website.

5. Pirelli: where manufacturing meets AI

For graduates in computer, electronic or automation engineering, a factory can also be a digital innovation lab. Pirelli has advertised a Computer Vision System Engineer role in Milan, aimed at candidates with around one to three years of experience. The job involves developing computer vision systems and algorithms to improve production quality, efficiency and sustainability. Programming and image-processing skills are among the relevant requirements.

6. Danieli: mechanical design and industrial systems

If your background is in mechanical, electrical or plant engineering, Danieli is another employer worth exploring. The industrial group develops technologies for the metals industry, and its careers portal lists roles such as Mechanical Designer, HVAC Engineer, Electrical Project Engineer and Package Engineer across different companies and locations in Italy. Vacancies can change quickly, so check the job requirements, location and application status directly on the company website before sending your CV. Explore Danieli’s open positions on the site.

7. Terna: power grids and the energy transition

Interested in electricity, energy networks and strategic infrastructure? Terna is an employer to keep on your radar, particularly if you studied electrical, energy, civil or management engineering. The company highlights professional profiles such as project engineers, project managers, grid connection specialists, maintenance professionals and digital construction specialists. A Junior Project Engineer listing had a stated deadline of 2 November, but its individual job page was unavailable when checked. Visit the current careers portal before treating that vacancy as still open.

8. Leonardo: aerospace, defence and space technology

For graduates in aerospace, electronics, computer or materials engineering, Leonardo is a company worth following closely. The group works across aerospace, defence and security, with projects involving design, navigation systems, electronics and software. A Space Navigation Engineer role in Rome was listed with a deadline of 25 October 2026. Since that date coincides with this article’s update, it should not be treated as a confirmed open vacancy. Check the official careers portal for new listings and current deadlines.

9. Hays: let recruiters widen your search

You do not always have to apply directly to an employer. Recruitment agencies can help you find engineering roles across several industries, especially manufacturing, energy, industrial processes and automation. Hays advertises positions for professionals such as process engineers, electrical engineers and manufacturing specialists. Opportunities vary by location and experience, so read each listing carefully to identify the client, essential skills and whether applications are still being accepted.

10. Rail, energy and infrastructure: keep looking

If you have not found the right vacancy yet, do not stop at the first round of applications. Large employers in transport, energy, networks and infrastructure regularly recruit engineers across civil, management, electrical, mechanical, environmental and IT disciplines. Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Snam and other industrial groups are worth adding to your bookmarks and checking regularly—but do not assume that every specialisation always has an open position.

Before you apply, make these three moves

Avoid sending the same CV to every employer. Highlight your university projects, technical skills and software tools, tailoring your profile to each role: programming for digital jobs, CAD and BIM for design, automation and control systems for manufacturing, or sustainability and networks for energy and environmental work. Always check the location, qualifications, contract and deadline on the official website, as vacancies can be updated or withdrawn at short notice. To understand which specialisations are in demand, also consult Unioncamere’s Excelsior database.
