What if moving to a Mediterranean paradise wasn’t just an expensive fantasy? What if it was a career move subsidized by the local government? If you ever dream of turquoise waters and a slower pace of life while staring out your office window, your timing couldn’t be better.

The Regional Government of Sardinia has approved a €50 million initiative. Under this scheme, authorities will pay young professionals, remote workers, and entrepreneurs up to €30,000 to move, work, or launch a business on the island.

The High Cost of Island Depopulation

Behind this generous incentive lies a pressing socio-economic reality. Like many rural regions across Southern Europe, Sardinia faces a severe demographic decline. Every year, thousands of talented young adults leave for mainland Europe in search of better career opportunities. As a result, historic villages in the central hinterland remain underpopulated and economically stagnant.

To reverse this trend, regional authorities decided to act boldly. The underlying philosophy is simple. Leaving should always be a free choice for personal growth. However, moving back—or settling on the island for the first time—must become a financially viable reality.

The monetary incentive offers two straightforward grant levels:

  • €20,000 Non-Repayable Grant: Awarded to individuals under 40 who officially transfer their primary residence to Sardinia to work or run a business.
  • €30,000 Non-Repayable Grant: Reserved for those who choose to settle in a small municipality with fewer than 5,000 residents.

Who Qualifies and What Are the Core Rules?

Getting paid tens of thousands of euros to live near idyllic beaches sounds almost too good to be true. However, the grant comes with clear, non-negotiable legal commitments to ensure long-term community integration:

  • Strict Age Requirement: Applicants must be under 40 years old at the time of application.
  • The Five-Year Residency Mandate: Beneficiaries must register their tax and legal residence in the chosen town within six months of grant approval. They must also maintain it for at least five consecutive years.
  • Real Economic Engagement: Candidates must actively work as employees, freelancers, or business owners, proving their contribution to the local economy.

Priority scoring will go to returning Sardinians, young families transferring their household, and innovative business projects. Authorities are especially encouraging moves to smaller inland communities where high-speed digital infrastructure is currently being rolled out.

Part of a Larger €150 Million Youth Ecosystem

This relocation package is far from a simple publicity stunt. It forms the centerpiece of a massive youth strategy backed by more than €150 million in regional funding.

The strategy includes several complementary initiatives:

  • €21 million for student welfare and housing programs in Cagliari and Sassari.
  • €44 million funneled through the “NewGens” job creation scheme.
  • Over €35 million dedicated to high-tech microcredit for innovative startups.
  • €30 million earmarked exclusively for young first-time agricultural entrepreneurs aged 18 to 40.

In conclusion, for digital nomads, expats, and young professionals seeking a healthier work-life balance in Southern Europe, Sardinia’s latest initiative turns a dream lifestyle into a tangible financial opportunity.
