Retirement Age by Profession in Italy

Who can retire earlier because of “usuranti” (arduous) or “gravosi” jobs, how night-shift thresholds work, and what proof INPS asks for

by Lorenzo Magliani

Working in Italy doesn’t always mean waiting until 67. Certain professions and work patterns unlock earlier exits with specific age + contribution mixes and, for some paths, a legacy “quota” formula (age plus years). Use this guide to see where profession changes the retirement date, what evidence you must have, and how these rules interact with general thresholds. If you need the baseline first, skim What Is the Retirement Age in Italy? as you read.

The baseline everyone starts from

  • Old-age pension: 67 with at least 20 years of contributions.

  • Ordinary early pension (no age limit): 42 years and 10 months (men) or 41 years and 10 months (women), then a short waiting window before first payment.
Profession-specific doors do not replace these anchors; they create earlier options when strict conditions are met. For the full map of minimum years across all routes, keep How Many Years Do You Need to Work to Qualify for a Pension in Italy? open.

“Lavori usuranti” (arduous jobs): the legacy quota path

Some jobs legally defined as usuranti can still use a quota formula that predates the standard framework. You must meet all of the following:

  • At least 35 years of contributions.

  • A minimum age and quota (age + years) that depends on the case.

  • Duty tenure: the arduous activity for at least 7 of the last 10 years or half of your working life (as applicable).

Standard arduous duties (including heavy manual work and certain drivers)

  • Employees: minimum age 61 years and 7 months and quota 97.6 (age + years), with ≥35 years of contributions.

  • Self-employed (or mixed careers with self-employment): minimum age 62 years and 7 months and quota 98.6, with ≥35 years.

Night-shift workers (turni notturni)

The threshold depends on how many nights you work per year. Nights are counted under statutory definitions (hours including the midnight–5 a.m. band) and must be documented.

  • ≥78 nights/year: treated like the standard arduous case above (employees 61y7m + quota 97.6; self-employed 62y7m + quota 98.6).

  • 72–77 nights/year: employees 62y7m + quota 98.6; self-employed 63y7m + quota 99.6.

  • 64–71 nights/year: employees 63y7m + quota 99.6; self-employed 64y7m + quota 100.6.
All variants require ≥35 years of contributions. If your plant runs 12-hour industrial shifts, special counting rules may apply; check them with HR when building your file.

Evidence you’ll need: employment contracts, CBA job codes, rosters/shift summaries that show the number of nights, and service certificates proving when you actually performed the arduous duty. Any gaps should be consistent with figurative periods (parental leave, illness) where allowed.

“Lavori gravosi” (strenuous occupations): early access, mainly via APE Sociale

The gravosi list covers a broader set of strenuous roles (e.g., construction workers, nursing staff on shifts, cleaners, crane operators, and others). It does not by itself open a quota pension; instead it typically grants access to APE Sociale, the state bridge that pays a monthly allowance until you reach old-age.

Key points for 2025:

  • Age: 63 years and 5 months.

  • Contributions: generally 36 years for gravosi (with a few subgroups at 32), or 30 years for other APE categories (caregivers, ≥74% disabled, unemployed after benefit exhaustion).

  • Cap & nature: APE is not a pension; it’s a capped, non-indexed allowance that ends when you qualify for old-age.
For category proofs, deadlines, and how to combine gravosi with other routes, keep Ape Sociale: Italy’s Early Retirement Path for Workers in Difficult Situations nearby.

Where profession and early-year routes intersect

  • Early starters (precoci) at 41 years: If you can document 1 year of contributions before age 19 and belong to a protected category (including many gravosi/usuranti roles, caregivers, disabled, unemployed after benefit exhaustion), you may retire with 41 total years regardless of age, after the waiting window.

  • Quota 103 (2025): A general early-exit door at 62 years + 41 years of contributions. It comes with a temporary monthly cap until old-age and a waiting window before first payment; it doesn’t require a specific profession. For a practical comparison of age+years paths, see Early Retirement in Italy: Is It Possible for Expats?.

Public safety and military professions (ordinamenti speciali)

Personnel in the Defence, Police and Fire Brigade sectors follow special statutory systems with their own age and length-of-service rules, waiting windows, and rank-based limits. Typical patterns include age-and-service mixes (for example, age around the late 50s with minimum service) or service-only thresholds with a specific window before payment. If your career is in these sectors, use your administration’s pension handbook and INPS’s dedicated pages and verify: limit of age, service years, and window months that apply to your rank and corps.

What counts toward the professional doors (and what doesn’t)

  • Mandatory contributions (employee/self-employed) always count toward the years requirement.

  • Figurative credits (maternity/parental leave, certain illness/injury, unemployment) generally protect the timeline, but duty-tenure tests for usuranti/gravosi are about effective work performed; months credited figuratively don’t replace missing night-shift days or duty tenure.

  • Voluntary contributions and redemptions (e.g., riscatto laurea) add years and, when applicable, value—but they do not create duty tenure.
If you’re targeting a profession-based door, track two ledgers: your years and your duty evidence.

Cross-border years: do they move the date for profession-based exits?

Under EU coordination and many bilateral agreements, foreign months/years are aggregated to open eligibility and each state pays its pro-rata share. But profession-specific proofs (e.g., night shifts for usuranti) are assessed under Italian definitions when you file in Italy. Foreign time may help you reach 35 years or a 41-year target, but it won’t satisfy Italian night-shift counts unless the law explicitly allows it and your records meet the Italian test. For aggregation mechanics, see Italian Pension Agreements with Foreign Countries.

How to prepare your file (so INPS says “yes” the first time)

  1. Download your INPS statement and confirm the years you already have. If months are missing or wages are wrong, fix them first—our How to Check Your Pension Contributions (INPS Statement Guide) shows how to file a correction with evidence.

  2. Collect duty proofs from HR: job codes, night-shift rosters with counts (78 / 72–77 / 64–71 bands), and tenure summaries. Keep copies for the last 10 years at least.

  3. Match your case to the exact door:

    • Usuranti quota → check age + quota + 35 years + duty tenure.

    • Night workers → pick the correct band (≥78, 72–77, 64–71) and confirm your minimum age and quota.

    • Gravosi → verify APE Sociale age and contributions (36/32 as applicable) and prepare the category attestation.

    • Precoci 41 → retrieve proof of pre-19 contributions and current protected status.

  4. Plan the waiting window (finestra). Many early doors start months after you hit the requirement; align your employment exit accordingly.

Quick copy-paste table (employees)

  • Usuranti standard (incl. drivers): 61y7m + quota 97.6 with ≥35y and required tenure.

  • Night shifts ≥78 nights/year: same as above.

  • Night shifts 72–77 nights/year: 62y7m + quota 98.6, ≥35y.

  • Night shifts 64–71 nights/year: 63y7m + quota 99.6, ≥35y.

  • Gravosi (APE Sociale): 63y5m + 36y (some subgroups 32y) as a bridge to old-age.

  • Ordinary early pension (no profession test): 42y10m (men) / 41y10m (women).

Map your career against these rows, verify your shift counts and tenure, and you’ll know exactly whether your profession brings your retirement forward—or whether one more year on the clock unlocks a meaningfully earlier door.
