Age Verification Starts for Porn Sites in Italy

New rules in Italy require verified access to adult content, trying to balance safety and online privacy.

Italy is about to shake up how adults browse the web. From today, every user who visits a porn site needs to prove their age with a valid ID. Forget the old “I’m over 18” button because that era is over.

The AGCOM (the italian communications authority and guarantor) is enforcing the new rule under the Decreto Caivano (Law 159/2023), which aims to shield minors from pornographic content that lawmakers say harms their dignity and mental health. In short, if you’re not 18 or older, you’re out.

Here’s how it works when browsing a pornographic website

Before entering an adult website, you’ll verify your age through a certified provider, such as:

  • bank,
  • mobile operator,
  • trusted ID service.

Once confirmed, you’ll get a token or anonymous credential that proves you’re an adult. The porn site never sees your personal details. AGCOM calls this a“double anonymity” system, proof without exposure.

The problem is that we still don’t know which providers will certify users’ ages, or how they will protect their data

Privacy groups warn that even if porn sites don’t store ID data, linking access to official credentials like SPID or CIE (Italy’s digital IDs) could reveal too much about users’ online habits. It is told that you can’t claim privacy when the state knows what you watch to have your time of leisure.

The End of Anonymous Browsing?

The change sounds simple, but it marks a big cultural moment. Italy is the first major European country to enforce an ID gate for adult content. Supporters applaud the move, saying it protects children and promotes digital responsibility. Critics, however, fear it opens the door to surveillance and data misuse.

AGCOM insists the system stays secure. The new regulation bans intrusive checks like facial scans or biometric verification and requires minimal data collection. Platforms that will keep ignoring the law risk will be blocked or fine at least at January,  31.

So, what will change for everyday users? Expect an extra step before accessing adult sites . There will be a quick identity confirmation instead of a simple click. For some, it’s a small price for a safer web. For others, it’s the end of anonymity in the name of protection.

Either way, Italy just turned a digital corner. From today, browsing adult content won’t just take curiosity, it’ll take credentials.
