Families receiving Italy’s Assegno Unico Universale (Universal Child Allowance) have an important deadline approaching. While most attention in June focuses on tax obligations, another key date could have a direct impact on household finances: June 30, 2026 is the final day to submit an updated ISEE and receive any back payments owed on the child benefit.
For many families, especially those who have not yet updated their economic information for 2026, missing this deadline could mean losing hundreds of euros in arrears that would otherwise be paid automatically by INPS.

Why the June 30 Deadline Matters
The amount of the Assegno Unico is linked to a family’s ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator), which measures income and assets to determine eligibility for a range of social benefits.
Every year, families are required to submit a new ISEE declaration if they want the allowance to be calculated on the basis of their current financial situation. Those who fail to do so are not excluded from the benefit altogether, but they receive only the minimum amount provided by law, regardless of their actual income level.
The critical date is June 30. Families that submit or update their ISEE by then can still obtain a recalculation of their benefit and recover any amounts they were entitled to receive from March onward.
What Happens If You Do Nothing?
If an updated ISEE was not submitted by the end of February, INPS automatically began paying the minimum child allowance amount from March 2026.
For 2026, the minimum payment is approximately €58.30 per child, while families with the lowest ISEE levels can receive up to €203.80 per child, before any additional supplements are applied.
This means that many households may currently be receiving substantially less than they are entitled to.
The good news is that the situation can still be corrected. By presenting an updated ISEE before June 30, INPS will recalculate the allowance and pay any outstanding differences dating back to March.
What If You Update Your ISEE After June 30?
Families can still submit an ISEE after the deadline, but there is an important consequence.
While the allowance amount will be adjusted going forward, the right to receive arrears for previous months is lost. In other words, the updated amount will only apply from the month in which the new declaration is submitted, without any retroactive payments covering the period from March to June.
For this reason, June 30 is widely considered the last opportunity to maximise the annual value of the benefit.
Do You Need to Submit a New Application?
One common misconception is that families must file a new application for the Assegno Unico every year.
In reality, applications that have already been approved generally continue automatically. What needs to be updated is the ISEE, not the benefit request itself.
This distinction is particularly important for expatriate families living in Italy, who may assume that the entire application process must be repeated annually.
Who Should Pay Particular Attention?
The June 30 deadline is especially relevant for:
- Families who have not yet submitted an ISEE for 2026
- Households whose financial situation has changed significantly
- Expat families living and working in Italy
- Parents who recently moved to Italy and are receiving family benefits
- Families who are currently receiving the minimum Assegno Unico amount and believe they may qualify for more
In many cases, updating the ISEE can lead not only to a higher monthly payment but also to the recognition of additional supplements linked to family circumstances, such as multiple children or disabilities.
How to Update Your ISEE
Families can submit a new DSU (Dichiarazione Sostitutiva Unica)** through:
- The INPS online portal;
- A CAF (tax assistance centre);
- An authorised tax professional.
Once the DSU has been processed, the new ISEE value will be used by INPS to determine the correct amount of the child allowance.
