Required Documents for the Modello 730 Tax Form

Collecting the right paperwork before you start the Modello 730 will save you time, cut errors, and increase your chances of a fast refund.

by Lorenzo Magliani

Filing Modello 730 is straightforward when your documents are complete. Use this verified, copy-and-paste checklist to prepare what a CAF/professional or the pre-filled 730 expects. If you’re still deciding whether 730 fits your profile (vs Redditi PF), open What Is the 730 Tax Form in Italy and Who Can Use It? while you build your pack.

1) Identity, residence, and withholding agent

Bring originals and clear copies/PDFs.

  • Passport/ID and codice fiscale.

  • Current address (residence certificate or self-declaration) to apply the correct regional/municipal add-ons.

  • Withholding agent details (employer or pension provider) for settlement in payroll. If you’ll file a 730 senza sostituto, have your IBAN ready for refunds.

  • Family status (marital status, custody arrangements), because dependent credits rely on months and percentages.

If you need a step-by-step on the form itself, keep How to Fill Out the 730 Tax Form in Italy open as you check each section below.

2) Income documents (what proves what you earned)

  • Certificazione Unica (CU) from every employer or pension payer. Check that gross, withholdings, and INPS contributions appear for each job/pension.

  • Occasional income subject to withholding (if any): receipts and payer statements.

  • Rental income from Italian properties: registered lease data (type, dates, percentage ownership) and rent receipts; if you use cedolare secca, bring the option details.

  • Investment income not already taxed at source in an administered/managed regime: bank/broker reports.

  • Other Italian income (e.g., land/agricultural income where applicable).

If you have foreign income or assets, 730 may no longer be the right form. Check the perimeter in Filing Taxes in Italy as an Expat: What You Need to Know before you proceed.

3) Property data for correct taxation

Even when no rent is due, property data affect add-ons and some credits:

  • Cadastral details (visura or prior return printout) for each property you own or co-own: category, share, use (main home vs other), periods of possession.

  • For rented units: registered contract (number/date), canone concordato attestazione if applicable, and any cedolare communications.

  • For primary home with a mortgage: bank interest certificate (see §5).

4) Dependents and family documentation

Credits depend on precise months and percentage of charge. Prepare:

  • Codice fiscale for spouse/children/dependents.

  • Proofs of shared custody or family-status where relevant.

  • For dependents with disabilities, the official disability certification to apply the correct framework.

Bringing these papers avoids the most common 730 mismatch: credits calculated for the wrong months.

5) Deductions tied to your home and loans

  • Mortgage interest (prima casa or eligible loans): the annual bank certificate showing interest paid, borrower names, and dates.

  • Life/accident/long-term-care insurance connected to the loan (if eligible): policy and premium receipts.

  • Construction/renovation interest (where applicable): lender statements and building paperwork proving eligibility.

For a refresher on how these items translate into IRPEF math, glance at Understanding Italian Income Tax Bands so you see where deductions reduce your taxable base and where credits reduce the tax due.

6) Healthcare expenses (and how to prove traceable payment)

Most medical expenses flow into the pre-filled return from pharmacies/clinics, but you should verify and integrate:

  • “Scontrini parlanti” from pharmacies (name, tax code, nature/quantity of medicines).

  • Invoices from doctors, dentists, labs, therapists.

  • Proof of traceable payment where required (debit/credit receipt, bank transfer).

  • Reimbursements from insurers or funds: bring statements so the CAF excludes reimbursed amounts.

  • Medical devices (eligible categories): invoices and certifications where needed.

7) Education, childcare, and work-life items

  • Tuition and fees for schools/universities (including recognized institutions), with payment proofs.

  • Childcare (asilo nido): invoices/receipts and annual statement from the provider.

  • Student housing (if claiming tenant deductions for university students away from home): lease contract, payments, and the required distance/university-town evidence.

8) Insurance and pension contributions

  • Life/accident/long-term-care insurance: policy, premium receipts, and (if group policy) the employer or fund statement showing your portion.

  • Complementary pension (previdenza complementare): annual statement from the fund (employee + employer + TFR routed; note that TFR flows are tracked but are not your “deducted contributions”).

  • INPS/cassa contributions you personally paid (domestic workers’ contributions, voluntary contributions, professional funds): bring F24 or payment receipts.

If complementary pensions are new to you and you’re deciding whether to top up, our primer Public vs. Private Pensions in Italy: What’s the Difference? clarifies deductions now and favorable taxation later.

9) Building bonuses (ongoing instalments and new works)

If you’re claiming instalments from past works (renovation/energy/home-improvement bonuses):

  • Invoices, bank transfers with the required causale, supplier VAT, and fiscal codes.

  • Technical/administrative filings (where required by the specific bonus) and ENEA communication protocols for eligible energy works.

  • If you bought a property carrying remaining instalments, bring the deed and the seller’s documents confirming the transfer of the tax benefit when permitted by law.

10) Donations and other common credits

  • Donations to qualifying entities (nonprofits, cultural, research): receipts with the beneficiary’s full details and traceable payment.

  • Sport for minors and similar recognized expenses (where applicable): provider receipts.

  • Public transport passes (if eligible in your case): passes and payment proofs.

11) Rentals and tenant-side deductions

If you are a tenant and eligible for a rent deduction (e.g., primary-home lease, young tenants, students, workers transferring residence):

  • Registered lease (type: 4+4, 3+2, transitional, student), payments, and any attestazione for canone concordato.

  • Domicile/residence documents if the deduction requires a move for work or study.

For the legal logic of agreed-rent contracts (which often intersect with tenant deductions), see What Is a Contratto a Canone Concordato?.

12) If you file a 730 without a withholding agent

Have your IBAN for refunds and be ready to pay F24 for amounts due on the standard calendar (June/July and November). For dates, reductions if you’re late, and how instalments work, keep Deadlines and Fines: How to Avoid Mistakes in Your Italian Tax Return next to your checklist.

13) Digital prep to speed up review

  • Create a single folder named “730–2025” with subfolders: Identity, CU, Property, Rentals, Healthcare, Education, Insurance-Pensions, Bonuses, Donations, F24.

  • Save PDFs with YYYY-MM-DD_description.pdf (e.g., 2024-12-31_MortgageInterest_BankX.pdf).

  • Bring last year’s return and F24 so the operator can cross-check carryovers and advances.

14) One-page quick checklist (copy-paste)

  • ID + codice fiscale + address; withholding agent or IBAN (if senza sostituto).

  • All CUs; any other income statements not handled at source.

  • Cadastral data for owned properties; leases + receipts; cedolare options.

  • Mortgage interest certificate; insurance tied to the loan if applicable.

  • Healthcare invoices + traceable payments; insurer reimbursements.

  • Education/childcare receipts; student housing papers where eligible.

  • Complementary pension statement; INPS/cassa receipts you paid.

  • Building-bonus invoices, transfers, and filings; deed if benefit transfers with the home.

  • Donations receipts; other eligible credits with payments.

  • Previous return + F24 for balances/advances.

With this pack, a CAF/pro can validate your 730 quickly, the pre-filled entries line up with your proofs, and refunds/withholdings run cleanly—no last-minute chases for missing certificates or receipts.
