Venezuela is facing one of the worst seismic disasters in its recent history. It all began on June 24, when two violent earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck the country’s coastal belt, with the epicenter in La Guaira state, near Caracas. The two tremors hit less than a minute apart, creating catastrophic effects.
Entire neighborhoods collapsed, hundreds of buildings were reduced to rubble and key infrastructure failed within minutes. The death toll continues to rise. According to the latest official figures and UN-backed estimates, fatalities have now exceeded 2’295, while injuries have surpassed 11’000. Tens of thousands remain missing and more than 15’000 people have already been displaced.

Deaths, injuries and missing people: the scale of the disaster
Venezuelan authorities continue rescue operations around the clock, but the picture remains devastating. Current figures:

The Google factor: millions of phones received warnings
But there is one aspect that has stunned the world. Seconds before the most destructive waves arrived, millions of Venezuelans received emergency alerts on their Android smartphones.
The system is called Google Android Earthquake Alerts. It uses phone accelerometers to detect P-waves, the first and less destructive seismic waves that arrive before the more dangerous S-waves. Google confirmed that the system sent alerts to more than 11.4 million users in Venezuela.
In some cases, the warning came 10 to 30 seconds before the strongest shaking. That may sound short — but it was enough to:

Experts believe the system may have saved thousands of lives.
Can technology reshape civil protection?
The Venezuela case is now sparking global debate. Until recently, earthquake warning systems were almost entirely controlled by governments and official seismic networks. Today, billions of smartphones can act as distributed sensors. This changes everything:
