These animal species risk disappearing within a few weeks

An invasive predator is devastating clam stocks across the Mediterranean. Here is what is happening and how producers are responding

For generations, clams have been one of the defining products of Mediterranean coastal economies. From Italian seafood traditions to large-scale aquaculture operations in the Adriatic Sea, clam farming has supported thousands of jobs and entire local communities. Today, however, the sector is facing one of the most serious challenges in its history.

At the heart of the crisis is the blue crab, an invasive species native to the Atlantic coast of the Americas. Over the past few years, the crab has spread rapidly throughout Mediterranean waters, taking advantage of its remarkable adaptability and increasingly warm sea temperatures. The consequences have been severe: damaged clam farms, collapsing production levels and growing economic losses for fishermen and aquaculture operators.

What makes the blue crab so dangerous?

Known scientifically as Callinectes sapidus, the blue crab is widely regarded as one of the most problematic invasive marine species currently present in the Mediterranean. Originally introduced through maritime traffic, the species has established itself successfully thanks to its high reproductive capacity and ability to thrive in different environmental conditions. Unfortunately for clam producers, it is also an extremely effective predator.

Scientific studies conducted in northern Adriatic lagoons have shown that blue crabs prey heavily on both juvenile and adult clams, destroying stocks before they can reach the market. Researchers have described the impact on local aquaculture as both ecologically significant and economically devastating.

The regions suffering the greatest damage

The most severe consequences have been recorded in the northern Adriatic Sea, particularly in the Italian regions of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna. Areas such as the Po Delta, Scardovari Lagoon, Goro and Chioggia have historically been among Europe’s most important clam-producing zones.

In recent years, however, production has collapsed. Industry groups report widespread business closures, dramatic revenue losses and increasing social hardship among fishing communities. In some locations, clam harvesting has almost completely stopped. The phenomenon is not limited to Italy. Established blue crab populations have also been reported across Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Turkey and parts of North Africa, highlighting the Mediterranean-wide scale of the problem.

The blue crab is not the only culprit

While the invasive predator receives most of the attention, scientists caution against viewing it as the sole cause of the crisis. The decline of clam populations appears to result from several overlapping pressures that are weakening marine ecosystems and making them more vulnerable to invasive species.

Among the most important factors are:

  • rising sea temperatures
  • prolonged episodes of marine mucilage
  • salinity changes linked to floods and extreme weather
  • deterioration of water quality in some coastal areas
  • increasing pressure from invasive species

Together, these conditions have created an environment in which blue crabs can thrive while clam populations struggle to recover.

How fishermen and farmers are fighting back

Faced with mounting losses, producers have begun experimenting with a range of defensive strategies. While none offers a complete solution, several approaches are helping to reduce damage and improve survival rates. Current measures include:

  • large-scale blue crab harvesting programmes
  • installation of protective barriers and fencing systems
  • reseeding of clam stocks
  • development of more controlled farming areas
  • promotion of blue crab consumption as a commercial seafood product

Some industry groups have even proposed importing clams from other European countries to help restore depleted farming areas more quickly.

The Mediterranean clam crisis is part of a much broader global pattern. Around the world, invasive species have repeatedly disrupted ecosystems and local economies. Examples include the lionfish invasion in the Caribbean, Asian carp in North America, zebra mussels in the Great Lakes and the European rabbit in Australia.

In each case, the arrival of a non-native species caused ecological changes that proved extremely difficult to reverse. International experience suggests that early intervention is critical. Once an invasive species becomes firmly established, complete eradication is rarely achievable.

Can Mediterranean clam farming survive?

Clams are unlikely to disappear from the Mediterranean anytime soon, but the industry faces a difficult future. Long-term success will depend on a combination of scientific research, public support and innovative aquaculture techniques.

Many experts believe the ultimate goal should not be eliminating the blue crab entirely, but rather learning how to manage its presence while limiting economic and environmental damage. At the same time, policymakers will need to address the underlying drivers of biological invasions, particularly climate change and the rapid warming of Mediterranean waters.

For fishermen, farmers and coastal communities, the challenge remains enormous. Yet the coming years will determine whether one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic seafood products can successfully adapt to a rapidly changing marine environment.
