Finding an affordable daycare (asilo nido) and navigating family subsidies in Italy can often feel overwhelming for expat parents. To streamline this process, the Italian INPS launched an upgraded digital hub: the Portal of the Family and Parenthood (Portale della Famiglia e della Genitorialità). This platform brings together localized daycare maps and around 40 family welfare services into a single digital entry point.

Finding Authorized Daycares Nearby with Geolocation

One of the main challenges for parents in Italy is locating accredited daycares and evaluating available options in their municipality. The portal addresses this through an interactive feature called Services Near Me (Servizi vicino a me).

Using built-in geolocation technology, parents can search in real time for authorized daycares and educational facilities for children aged 0 to 3 years old in their immediate area. The database updates regularly through local municipal registries, helping families identify local public and accredited private daycare options quickly.

Additionally, the portal includes an interactive National Map of Family Centers (Mappa nazionale dei Centri per la famiglia). These centers offer regional support, parental counseling, and guidance on local family services.

How to Lower Daycare Costs: Claiming the Bonus Asilo Nido

Finding a local daycare represents only half the challenge; managing the monthly cost is equally important. Through the INPS portal, parents can apply directly for major financial support programs, most notably the Bonus Asilo Nido (Daycare Allowance).

The Bonus Asilo Nido helps offset public and private daycare tuition fees or provides home support for children under three with chronic conditions. The subsidy amount depends on your household financial standing indicator (ISEE—Indicatore della Situazione Economica Equivalente):

  • High Subsidy Tier (Lower ISEE): Families with a lower ISEE receive higher annual reimbursements, significantly reducing monthly daycare expenses.
  • Standard Subsidy Tier: Even families without an ISEE or with higher incomes qualify for a baseline contribution toward daycare costs.

Applying directly through the unified INPS portal allows parents to submit monthly payment receipts digitally and track their reimbursement status in real time.

Accessing 40+ Family Subsidies in One Digital Hub

Beyond daycare search tools and tuition reimbursements, the portal serves as a central hub for various state allowances. Specifically, parents can manage key subsidies including:

  • Single Universal Allowance (Assegno Unico e Universale): The monthly state payment granted for each dependent child from the seventh month of pregnancy up to age 21.
  • Maternity and Paternity Leave (Congedi di Maternità e Paternità): Applications and status tracking for statutory parental leave benefits.
  • Newborn Allowances (Bonus Nuovi Nati): Support measures aimed at helping parents manage immediate costs after birth.

How to Access the INPS Family Portal

To use the portal, visit the official INPS website (inps.it) and search for the Portale della Famiglia e della Genitorialità. Log in using your digital identity credentials:

  • SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale)
  • CIE (Carta d’Identità Elettronica)

Once logged in, the platform customizes displayed benefits based on your household composition and previous applications. By leveraging these digital maps and applying for all eligible subsidies, foreign residents in Italy can find quality early childhood education while keeping family expenses under control.
