The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards once again brought together some of the biggest names in international music, but two artists dominated the night in particular: Taylor Swift and Madonna. The ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater and hosted by Snoop Dogg, gave Swift another historic record while Madonna collected more awards than any other artist at this year’s ceremony.

For Taylor Swift, the achievement adds another milestone to an already extraordinary career. With her latest award, the singer became the most awarded artist in VMAs history, reaching 31 trophies and moving ahead of Beyoncé, who has 30.

Taylor Swift makes VMAs history again

The award that allowed Swift to set the new record was the first MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a prize created to recognise artists who have developed a distinctive creative identity behind the camera and contributed to the evolution of storytelling through music videos.

But the new record was not Swift’s only success of the night. She also won Video of the Year for The Fate of Ophelia and Best Direction for Opalite. She dedicated the first award to Dolly Parton, who died in August, describing her as one of the most important figures in the history of American music and storytelling.

The ceremony also gave Swift another opportunity to highlight her growing creative role in music videos. During the Artist Director Honors segment, the singer introduced the new video for Patient Zero, which she directed and stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.

The overall result confirms a development that has become increasingly visible throughout Swift’s career: she is not only one of the most decorated pop artists of her generation, but also an increasingly important figure in songwriting, directing and the creation of the visual world surrounding her music.

Madonna returns to the VMAs with seven awards

If Swift wrote another chapter in VMAs history, Madonna was the night’s other major protagonist. The 68-year-old singer returned to the Video Music Awards stage for the first time since 2003, when she famously performed with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Twenty-three years later, Madonna once again opened the show, turning her comeback into one of the central moments of the entire ceremony.

Her performance also featured Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, along with other guests, in a medley connected to the Confessions II project. Madonna then turned her successful return to the stage into a triumph at the awards as well, collecting seven Moon Person trophies, more than any other artist at the 2026 ceremony.

Her awards included Artist of the Year, Best Album, Best Collaboration, Best Dance, Best Cinematography, Best Choreography and Best Long Form Video. The collaboration award came alongside Sabrina Carpenter for Bring Your Love, while several of the other trophies recognised Confessions II – The Film.

During her acceptance speech for Artist of the Year, Madonna looked back at her debut at the VMAs in 1984 and at some of the moments that caused controversy at the time. Forty-three years after her first appearance, she returned to the same stage to collect one of the ceremony’s most important awards.

Snoop Dogg, Bruno Mars and the biggest performances

A particularly lively night was held together by Snoop Dogg, who hosted the VMAs for the first time. The rapper opened his monologue by joking about Madonna’s performance, referring to her as an icon and playing on her long history with the MTV Awards. The show then featured a long list of international stars. One of the most anticipated performances came from Bruno Mars, while Lisa, Raye, Shaboozey, Gunna and Sienna Spiro also took the stage.

Another important moment involved the surviving members of Nirvana. Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear received the Video Vanguard Award in recognition of the band’s influence on the history of music videos and popular culture.

The ceremony also paid tribute to Dolly Parton, who died in August. Kacey Musgraves performed I Will Always Love You in her honour, creating one of the more emotional moments of the evening.

Red-carpet looks, social media and controversy

As always, the red carpet attracted almost as much attention as the awards themselves. Taylor Swift opted for a black-and-silver Tamara Ralph Couture gown, while some of the most photographed looks included those worn by Teyana Taylor, Tyla, PinkPantheress, Raye and sisters Paris and Nicky Hilton.

Madonna and Sabrina Carpenter did not walk the red carpet, as they were preparing for the show’s opening performance. For her appearance on stage, Madonna wore a look featuring a black satin mini trench coat, pink bodysuit, black corset and thigh-high boots, while Carpenter performed in a black-and-white outfit.

There was, of course, no shortage of discussion on social media. One of the first controversies concerned the delayed start of the ceremony, which began around 20 minutes late because of the NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, which went into overtime. Online users also debated Bruno Mars’ performance, which was broadcast as a pre-recorded segment, and Madonna’s appearance, with some social-media users criticising what they described as poor lip-syncing. These were reactions from viewers online, rather than an official assessment of the performances.

Beyond the controversies and the individual moments that went viral, however, the clearest story of the 2026 VMAs remains the success of its two biggest protagonists. Taylor Swift rewrote the all-time record for awards won at the ceremony, while Madonna once again demonstrated her ability to command the spotlight more than four decades after her debut. That is also what continues to make the Video Music Awards such a distinctive event: a single night can bring together a new generation of pop stars, global music phenomena and artists who helped shape the history of music videos itself.
