PosteID and SPID: Digital Identity Services

If you plan to handle taxes, healthcare, school enrollments, benefits, or local paperwork online, you’ll need a digital identity. In Italy, the standard is SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale). PosteID is Poste Italiane’s identity solution you can use to obtain SPID credentials with an easy, nationwide onboarding flow. What SPID is (and why you need it)

Think of SPID as a secure, reusable login you can use across thousands of Italian public (and many private) websites—tax filings, municipal services, healthcare bookings, university portals, and more. You can obtain SPID through several accredited identity providers—one of the most convenient for expats is Poste Italiane via its PosteID service.

PosteID in a nutshell

PosteID is the identity solution from Poste Italiane that lets you verify your identity and issue SPID credentials. You can start online and then complete identification remotely or at a post office. After activation, you will use the PosteID app (or web) to approve logins with one-tap confirmations or OTP codes.

What you need before you start

• Valid ID (passport or EU ID card).

• Italian mobile number and email you control (used for security and recovery).
• Residence details (address in Italy, if available). Some flows allow non-residents; check the provider’s requirements during sign-up.

How to request SPID with PosteID (step by step)

1. Start the request online. Go to the provider page and choose the onboarding path (remote or in person): PosteID — Start here (IT → EN).
2. Create your Poste account (if you don’t have one) with your email and mobile number. You may be asked to confirm via OTP.
3. Enter personal data exactly as on your ID and codice fiscale. Mismatches will cause delays.

5. Complete identification by showing your ID and confirming your data. You’ll then receive instructions to activate the PosteID app or web credentials.
6. Activate the app/login approvals. Install the PosteID app on your phone and enable one-tap approvals or OTPs. This becomes your daily way to log into public services.

Once active, SPID replaces dozens of separate passwords. Common use cases include:

Security levels, app approvals, and good habits

SPID comes with security levels (1–3). Most day-to-day services use two-factor login (something you know + something you have). With PosteID this is typically a push approval or an OTP in the app. Good practices: keep your phone’s OS updated; protect the PosteID app with biometrics; never share one-time codes; and verify the URL of any portal before entering your credentials (prefer opening from the official sites linked in this guide).

Fixing common issues

Name mismatch or diacritics? Make sure your name and birthplace match your ID and tax code exactly. If something was entered incorrectly, update it in the provider account and, if needed, re-verify at a branch. New phone, who’s this? Reinstall the app and re-pair it to your account; if you changed number, update it first in your profile. Locked out? Use the provider’s recovery flow; if that fails, visit a post office with your ID for identity recovery.
