From October 2025, Instant Euro Transfers Must Cost No More Than Standard SEPA

New EU rules require banks in Italy and across the euro area to offer instant payments 24/7, at fees equal to or lower than regular transfers, with free name–IBAN checks.

Instant euro transfers just became the new normal in Italy. From this month, providers across the euro area are required to offer SEPA Instant Credit Transfers around the clock and to price them at no more than standard SEPA transfers. Another key change is the roll-out of free Verification of Payee (name–IBAN check) to curb misdirected payments and fraud.

In practice, this means you can pay rent deposits, invoices or last-minute bills in seconds—even on weekends—without paying a premium compared to a regular bank transfer. Below we summarise what changes for residents and newcomers in Italy, and how to get set up smoothly.

If you’re new to Italy and still sorting out your banking, start with a local account (how to open a bank account) and learn how the post office fits into everyday payments (what you can do at the Post Office). Non-residents can explore interim options here: non-resident bank accounts in Italy.

What’s changing now

Same or lower price than standard SEPA. Banks and payment firms can no longer charge extra for instant euro transfers compared with a regular SEPA credit transfer. This pricing rule removes the main barrier that kept many users on slower D+1 transfers.

24/7/365 availability. Instant transfers are available day and night, including weekends and holidays. Providers may still have brief planned maintenance windows, but the service is otherwise continuous.

Free Verification of Payee (VoP). Your app must show whether the recipient’s name matches the IBAN before you confirm payment (“match”, “close match”, or “no match”). This helps prevent typing mistakes and invoice-swap frauds.

How this affects everyday life in Italy

Rent and deposits. Landlords increasingly request proof of instant crediting before handing over keys. With VoP, you can also verify that the beneficiary name matches your landlord’s IBAN.

Utilities and services. If a bill is due today, you don’t need to rush to a physical counter. Pay by instant transfer and keep the confirmation receipt in your email/app. For services still paid through postal channels, check acceptance timelines in advance (the Post Office can process a wide range of payments; see our guide linked above).

Freelance and small business cash flow. Faster settlement reduces late-payment friction. Include your legal name exactly as registered with your bank so that clients see a “match” under VoP.

Practical tips to avoid hiccups

  • Use VoP every time for new payees. If you see a “no match”, stop and double-check the invoice details with a trusted phone number.
  • Mind cut-off rules for standard SEPA. If you miss the bank’s daily cut-off, a regular transfer posts the next business day. Choose instant when timing is critical.
  • Keep a clear payment reason (causale). Write “Rent Nov 2025 – Via Rossi 10” or “Invoice 24/2025 – Web design” to avoid compliance holds.

What stays the same

SEPA credit transfers (non-instant) still work as usual and typically reach the beneficiary by the next business day (D+1). Direct debits (SDD) continue to handle recurring bills with refund windows for errors or unauthorized debits.

How to get set up quickly

1) Open a local account. Pick a bank or postal account that supports instant payments in the app and clearly lists fees and maintenance windows (our account-opening guide).

2) Add key payees with VoP. Save landlord, employer, and utility IBANs—confirm the displayed name matches before saving.

3) Decide when to use instant vs. standard. Use instant for deadlines, property transactions and deliveries on proof of funds; standard SEPA is fine for routine, non-urgent payments.

Timeline and scope

The EU Instant Payments framework is now in force across the euro area. Providers must offer instant transfers and free name–IBAN verification; euro-area users benefit first, with staged obligations for other SEPA countries to follow under the same Regulation.
